ISTUD and Health Care

ISTUD and Health Care

The Health Care Area of ISTUD designs and carries out applied research activities, training courses, and organizational-relational consulting in the health care sector.

Established in 2002, it has grown to become an international reference entity for development and dissemination of the Medical Humanities, narrative medicine, human care, therapy customization, and the evolution of health care organizations.

Through our understanding of the needs of the main players in the health pipeline – patients, families, healthcare professionals, scientific societies, patient associations, health institutions, life science companies – we aim at improving care and support, while promoting a sustainable health care capable to provide practical responses in health care organizations.

RESEARCH IN THE HEALTH CARE AND HEALTH AREA

ISTUD projects provide for the active engagement of the main stakeholders from the areas under investigation and are characterized as “applied research” projects. They pursue the development of “know-how” on poorly studied issues and the production of evidence to improve care and develop services.

The application of strict qualitative analysis criteria integrated with quantitative analyses allowed ISTUD to publish its findings in international indexed scientific reviews.

The ISTUD Foundation is accredited by the MIUR – the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities, and Research, as a Private Research Organization and Institution suited to host to researchers from third countries.

NARRATIVE MEDICINE

ISTUD is an international reference entity for the dissemination and implementation of narrative medicine.

Narrative medicine, the collection of stories from patients, caregivers, health care and social operators, is concerned with how the individual experiences his or her disease, and with the possible meaning of a care process to be initiated and carried out in co-operation with the health care operator or the reference social and health care team.

In 2016 ISTUD was a reviewer for the World Health Organization of the implementation modes of narrative methods in health care “Cultural contexts of health: the use of narrative research in the health sector”.

HEALTH CARE MANAGEMENT

ISTUD supports organizational and healthcare policy changes at national and local level by supplying the evidence acquired through research and consulting projects that provide for the construction of the patient’s journey to review the journey through patient care; projects for quantification of the burden of illness, i.e. the economic impact of living under care according to the perspective of the patient/family; consensus meeting to promote a confrontation among cross-disciplinary teams on health care management issues.
