Role-Play

In role-play activities trainees are asked to play the roles of the “actors” in a given situation, and to act out the interaction between them, while other members of the class act as “observers”, noting the content and processes emerging from the role-play. In essence, it is a dramatic representation of a scene that could realistically occur in a real life work situation. Trainees act out an “incident” and are then given the opportunity to analyze their own behaviour, to practice adopting different approaches and attitudes, to focus on different points of view and to receive feedback on their own behaviour. Role-play is intended to make trainees aware of their own behaviour and attitudes, to highlight feelings and reactions brought out by the situation acted out, and, in general, to put participants in touch with their subjective feelings and to allow them to learn about their own approach to interpersonal relations and communication.

This method provides trainees with many different stimuli for learning: imitation and action, the observation of the behaviour of others and the comments received about their own, as well as the general analysis of the entire process.
